Three Car Crash Injures Police Officer

On Thursday March 12 there was a three car crash which injured a Greenville police officer and another driver, sending them to hospital.

According to the Highway Patrol, the accident happened during the afternoon when a Lincoln was heading east on 10th Street. It stopped at the red light at the intersection of Greenville Boulevard and when the light changed just for those people who wanted to turn right, the Lincoln driver drove straight ahead and hit a Chevrolet Suburban going north on Greenville Boulevard. The Suburban then hit a Greenville police traffic safety unit which was stopped at the red light in the westbound lane of 10th Street.

The police officer, with shoulder pain, and the woman driving the Lincoln were both taken to Vidant Medical Center but both are expected to recover from their injuries.

The Highway Patrol says that they are expecting to file charges against the driver of the Lincoln.

On Friday night, an elderly Greenville man died in a house fire

According to firefighters, the fire was noticed at about 7.30 p.m. in a home in Douthit Circle, just three blocks from the West End fire station.

Neighbors ran up the street to the fire station to report the blaze but by then the fire was out of control inside the house, which heated with kerosene heaters.

Firefighters took only 15 minutes to extinguish the fire and located the victim, 75 year old Mark Walker Jr. in his bedroom. He was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m. and the autopsy showed the cause of death as burns and smoke inhalation.

Early indications are that the fire started accidentally but it is still under investigation although his death has been ruled an accident.
