Travelers Rest High School graduate killed in car crash

On Sunday evening, July 19, a Travelers Rest High School graduate was killed in a car crash.

According to the Highway Patrol, Joseph Gillespie was driving a Volkswagen Jetta shortly before 9.30 p.m. on State 11 near Talley Bridge Road in Pickens County, when he ran a stop sign and collided with a four door vehicle.

Gillespie was not wearing a seat belt and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, who lives in Taylor, was taken by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

Gillespie graduated from Travelers Rest High School this year and had accepted a scholarship to play baseball at Erskine College.

According to his coach he was well liked by community members, friends and family and the town of Travelers Rest will miss him. He was also a major huge contributor to a Devildogs basketball team that won a second straight Peach Blossom AAA Region championship.
